River City Circumstances; or Infant Baptism (stream of consciousness writing 15)

The night rats are out
And feeding
On the river city dregs
That have settled
All along the banks

You sleep so long
And well
in your place
On the west end
That you no longer
Need me
Because you have no fear
Of dreaming

The brawlers
Are crashing
Fists into flesh
Or thin air
And tabs
Are being left
Open
For return trips
To the open bar

The night life
has a pulse
And those who work it
Have black-collar jobs
Whose shifts rarely end
Short of the graveyard

Call to me now
From your safe place
Above the traffic
Where the airwaves
Are suffering
And the weather
Is deciding what
It wants
To do today

I'll meet you there
By the water
Where we will bathe
In the same water
From our infant baptism
