I Took Some Melatonin and This is What Happened

It's quiet out, now-
Save for the riled bark
Of the neighbors dog
Or the soft hum
Of a car or two
Coming down
The bend
In the wake
Of a slow, solid night
The kind that hangs
Above you freely
And heavily
As you track down
Each thought you have
To its singular, pulsating root
And when you cut into it
You find it's origin-
It's pattern of growth
Shocking
And unable to be
Recalled.
